Every Kixie API request is authenticated with two values: an API key and a Business ID. Both belong to the account, not to an individual user, and each account has exactly one of each.
Before You Start
Two things have to be true before any request will work:
- Your account is on the Professional billing tier or above. The API is not available on lower tiers.
- Your API key has been activated. Keys are not active by default. Email support@kixie.com, use the live chat in the dashboard, or ask your Account Manager to switch it on.
If you skip the activation step, requests will fail even though the key looks correct. This is the most common reason a first integration attempt does not work.
Finding Your API Key and Business ID
You need Admin permissions. In the Kixie dashboard:
- Go to Manage > Account Settings.
- Click Edit All.
- Open the Integrations tab.
Your API key and Business ID are both shown there. The Business ID is also your Kixie account number, and support will ask for it when you open a ticket.
How to Authenticate a Request
The API key is passed as a query string parameter on the endpoint:
https://apig.kixie.com/app/event?apikey=<api-key-here>
Most endpoints also expect apikey and businessid inside the JSON request body. Send both, as shown in the example in each endpoint's own article. Set Content-Type: application/json on every request.
Keep the Key Secret
The key authenticates the whole account, not one user, and there is only one of them. Anyone holding it can place calls and send messages billed to you. Keep it in server-side configuration or a secrets manager, never in client-side code, a public repository or a shared document. If you believe it has been exposed, contact support to have it rotated.
Endpoint Reference
Each endpoint has its own article with the request body and field definitions:
- Make a Call API
- Business/Team SMS API
- Send to Queue API
- Kixie Agent Status API
- Managing Kixie Event Webhooks via API
Other Ways This Shows Up
Developers look for this as the Kixie API key, API token, authentication, auth, credentials, where to find the business ID or BID, or why an API request returns an error on the first attempt.
